St John’s Family Centre opened its doors to the public in July 2012.It is ideally located in St John’s Ward which has been recognised by the Welsh Government as an area of deprivation.
Our centre aims to bring many organisations and sectors together under one roof e.g. Health and Family Support, Playgroup, Foodbank, Food Co-op, Bereavement Counselling, Powys Befrienders, Dementia Matters Powys, Council for Social Responsibility and Shelter Cymru. This sharing in expertise improves the co-ordination, quantity and quality of services, which will ensure better outcomes for the all members of the community.
St John's in Brecon's work has been developing over the past year and is flourishing. The luncheon club continues to grow in popularity, the gardening club is taking root and a range of cookery classes and healthy eating initiatives are being served up. The strong partnership links with Brecon Foodbank and Dementia Matters Powys are going from strength to strength and a new playgroup was set up this spring. Our Food Co-op offers the opportunity for community members to access quality fresh produce at affordable prices.
The building provides disabled access to all rooms on ground and upper floor level. We also hire out rooms to the community and external organisations:
Our Kitchen and Dining Area can be hired out for informal meetings and cookery courses. Our main hall can be hired out for parties, large meetings and community events. It also has a wet play area, children’s toilets and access to an enclosed garden. We also have a Training room and a Meeting Room. Both provide Wi-Fi access and flip chart and can seat up to 12 people.
